A Different Gas Station!!

It's a different Gas Station altogether. Apart from selling petro products, it also offers quite a few other things under one roof.

If you are hungry and want to have a quick bite, you can try some fast food at Pizza Corner or Noodles King. If you are tired of quickies, you can try your luck at Aishwariya which is supposed to be a Multi Cuisine Restaurant (Though I wouldn't recommend the north Indian dishes). And there is Adyar Anandha Bavan, if you fancy sweets and chats.

Thirsty?? You don't have to go anywhere, The Fruit Shop on the Greams Road offers you a vide variety of fruit juices and mocktails. Above all this, there is In&Out Shop, which offers everything you need, ofcourse you need to pay for it (Running out of cash?? Bingo, there's a Stanchart ATM), right from key chains to frozen foods.

The location, you couldn't have asked for more!!! Sandwiched between Radisson and Trident Hilton!!!!

Is There A Reunion In The Offing?

You feel really delighted when you bang on somebody accidentally and come to know that you have known each other for a long time, but have lost touch due to unavoidable circumstances.. Reunion is always a pleasure and you tend to exchange views on whatever happened during that intervening period... Is there a reunion in the offing? Possible going by what two people have said so far...

Confusing? I know... Thought of writing something else but ended up writing this... so please bear with me!!!

I am talking about 2 adivasies of Nanganallur, our own Sridhar and Ramesh, who had lived in Nanganallur since his childhood and had moved to the US in search of greener pastures.... Let see how the story develops....

Sridhar and Ramesh can you update us on the further developments??

"Approach Road To Nanganallur Subway" Is It One Way Or Dead Way

If you are planning to hold a cross country race, then you don't have to look anywhere else. You need not take the pains of constructing a race track also. You just have to visit College Road, which is the approach road to the Nanganallur Subway from Nanganallur Markek.. It has got all the ingredients for a cross country race course. It is very sad that this road has not seen its day light for over a decade.

Though nobody used this in the past as everybody used the other road which connects Nanganallur Subway from the Market, suddenly this has come into limelight thanks to the traffic police. They have made college road as a one way for vehicles plying from Nanganallur Market to the Subway and the other road for the vehicles coming into Nanganallur.

Of course, the Autowallas can take any whichever road they want as they seem to be exceptions to all city traffic rules... Though we are proud to be living in this place, they are certain basic infrastructure which the municipal authorities have to take care off... In fact nobody seems to be bothered about the condition of the college road as they drive pass that every day in and day out...

People awareness about the basic infrastructure is at the lowest ebb in Nanganallur as there seem to be not even a single sign of protest about the conditions.

Nanganallurwasies, lets do something and help the place to come up of age!!!

"Looks Are Deceptive" The Nanganallur Way

Guys, Beware.. I was as usual browsing the idiot box last night at around 10 pm when I stumbled upon a program in Vijay TV called "Kuttramâ". Suddenly the place shown on the TV looked familiar. Yes, you guessed it right, it was Nanganallur... This program, I guess, is a reality show which narrates the crime as it happened. Yesterday's program was all about a well educated guy who was engaged in stealing laptops and caught finally by the Police with the help of "Friends of Police"...

It all started like this...

Srinivasan, a resident of Nanganallur had given an advertisement in the local newspaper for selling his laptop. A guy claiming himself as Sekar called Srinivasan and told him that he is running a software company and would like to buy the laptop Srinivasan gave his address and asked the guy to come to his place for inspection of the laptop. Sekar didn't turn up on any of the times he promised to come and suddenly turned up one fine day with one more guy when Srinivasan was not around...

Sekar told Srinivasan's brother that he had spoken to Srinivasan regarding buying of the laptop and would like to look at the laptop... Srinivasan's brother showed him the laptop and Sekar told him that he is buying the laptop for one of his friends and wanted to take it out and show it to his friend... Srivivasan's brother hesitated initially but later on allowed Sekar to take the laptop as Sekar asked the person accompanying him to stay at Srinivasan's residence till he is back... The guy at Srinivasan Residence somehow escaped and Sekar didn't turn up at all... Realizing that he has lost his laptop Srinivasan gave a police compliant and, to his surprise, he was told by the Police that the same is happening in and around Nanganallur for some time and they are trying to nap the criminal...

The police devised a plan to nab the guy and asked "Friends of Police" to give ads in the local newspaper for the sale of laptop.. Bingo...The guy fell in the trap and was caught by the Police... His real name was Krishna and he is from Mangalore, a well educated guy who speaks 6 languages altogether... He looked pretty decent to me
and doesn't look like a criminal at all...

"Looks Are Deceptive" Beware Guys...

Night Patrol!!!!!!!!

Nanganallur is always renowned for its Night Patrol by the residents... Any news channel which covers night patrol will never fail to mention about the night patrolling done at Nanganallur (Am not sure whether this is being done in any other place or not)...

It's a very unique concept by which the residents in co-operation with the police patrol around the locality at nights. A pool of volunteers consisting of an individual from each house in the locality is identified and seven batches of them are created to man each day. A batch typically comprise of 5 to 10 persons. The patrol starts at 11 pm and goes till 5 am in the morning. The patrol is normally done on a shift basis where the first shift is for 11 pm to 2 am and the next shift is for 2 am to 5 am.

Believe it or not, Lakshmi Nagar in Nanganallur has been doing night patrol for the past 15 years without any break which, I think, is a marvelous achievement by any standards. It's slowly catching up in other areas of Nanganallur also where residents have started to go on night patrol...

I am sure and everybody would agree that people wouldn't mind sacrificing 3 hrs of sleep in a week for the safety of the entire locality (of course including yours).. We cannot always depend fully on the police department to protect us because their resources will not be sufficient to cover the entire locality and we necessarily have to supplement their resources for better protection of our neighborhood.

Some may argue that it's their job to take care of us since their salary is paid out of the taxes we pay. Even though I fully agree with this argument, we may probably look at this from a different perceptive that the 3 hrs of our sleep is a sort of tax paid by the residents to their own locality.

Whether night patrol would fully eliminate the threat of burglary is anybody's guess. But, I think, it would certainly cast a doubt in the minds of the thieves since they stand the risk of getting caught. This, thereby, reduces the chances of thieves going in for any adventures in a locality which has a night patro1!!

Is This The Trurth About Taj Mahal???

The Moghul Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal built the Taj Mahal. It was built in 22 years (1631 to 1653) by 20,000 artisans brought to India from all over the world. Many people believe Ustad Isa of Iran designed it.

This is what your guide probably told you if you ever visited the Taj Mahal. No one has ever challenged it except Professor P.N.Oak, who believes that the whole world has been duped. For more, visit Big Time

NavRathri @ my place

Guest Blog by Karthik

It’s now the Dhashara season. We spent the whole of yesterday evening arranging dolls and decorating. Gholu as it is called in the south is really entertaining. The function is mainly for girls and female members in the family. Evenings are real fun. Thinking of 12 years back…. My sister and me go around to friends and relatives place inviting them. The best part was the song we normally go and sing in all the places (Lambodara lakumikara). That was the period I started learning carnatic music and that was the only complete geetham I learnt. I really miss those lovely days.

I am seeing the Navarathri festival after close to 6years (1999-2004). It somehow looks more modern nowdays. Those days we decorate the display with color papers etc.. I see more of serial lamps now, I used to setup a theme park or play area with mountains etc (what a combination right?) but I very hardly find all that nowdays.

NavRathiri At Nallur

Dhasra, as it's called in North or NavRathiri/Gholu as it's called in South or Durga Puja as it's called in Bengal, brings cheers to all and especially it is a great fun for the kids.

I still remember those days where we eagerly look forward to NavRathiri because it will be Chuti to school for 10 days and also it used to great fun arranging the ghoul and the park and ofcourse Sundal, can anybody forget about that!!!

It's very difficult to describe the Excitement of going to as many houses as possible every day!!! But it was absolutely thrilling and full of entertainment for 10 days.....

As usual, this year, Navrathiri started off yesterday with much fun fare and here is the Gholu at our place for those who will not be able to make it this time to the Gholu.....

"Ardhanareeswarar" Temple at Nanganallur

In the 1960s, the Paramacharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam discovered a old temple when he was performing a morning puja at an abandoned temple tank in the area.

He also spotted an ancient Lingam in the tank and named it "Ardhanareeswarar". He directed some of his bhatas to place the lingam on the banks of the temple tank and asked them to perform pujas on a regular basis. The devotees fulfilled his wish immediately and retrieved the lingam and installed it in a makeshift thatched shed on the banks of the tank on the Fourth Main Road in Nanganallur. Soon a small shrine was constructed according to the stipulations of the Agama and the parivara devatas were put up around the sanctum sanctorum. A life-size idol of Sri Ashtabhuja Shanthi Durga, similar to the one in the ancient Pattiswaram temple in Thanjavur district, was installed in a separate shrine. Regular pujas were conducted after consecrating the idols. It is believed that the deities fulfil people's wishes and hence the temple is crowded most of the time. The Kumbaabhezam of the temple was recently done in the month of March 2004 which was well attended by the devotees at large and also graced by Sri Sankarachariyas of Kanchi.
