Thirupachi – Oh it’s Veruppachi!!

It’s been long since I have been to the theatre to watch a Tamil movie expect ofcourse Mani’s and Kamal’s. But I thought it’s high time I watch Tamil movies also in the theatre and decided to take the plunge on Saturday. It was a sunny afternoon, big deal it’s always sunny in Chennai, and I zeroed in on Tirupachi. Just made it to Mayajal before the start and paid Rs. 150 bucks for the ticket.

So far so good, got the tickets without a hitch, pop corns for munching and seated comfortably. But sadly, the honeymoon came to an abrupt end. Oh no!! What are you thinking?? I am talking about the start of the movie. The movie started with the usual song and dance sequence in front of the Aiyannar temple. It’s a village backdrop you see, so the start has to be that way only. Kudos to all our directors who think alike on this aspect and don’t surprise us with anything else.

The debutant director has not scratched his head for any new script, but rather latched on to the old Indian Masala story. Hero from a village goes to the City and takes on the villains in their own courtyard. Ofcourse with lots of songs, fights and brother-sister sentiments in between.

First half was a total disaster. A bit of comedy, a bit of songs, quite a bit of sentiment and a bit of everything, but nothing of substance. Even the vivid Vijay fans couldn’t stand the torture that many of them left before the break. I was almost tempted to follow suit as I did a month back while watching Veer Zaara, but somehow decided to stay put. Thank the stars for that, the second half was lot more better and looked more like a Vijay movie except for the songs in between with no link whatsoever with the screenplay. But I could guess what would have gone through the director’s mind!! Where on earth can he bring in Trisha having signed her, I am sure, for a hefty sum.

But I should appreciate the director for thinking of such colourful names for the bad guys. Ohh my god, I couldn’t stop laughing!! Panparaag Ravi, Patos Balu and Saniyan Sakatai. They looked more like comedians than bad guys to me.

Vijay as usual has done his part well without any hint of over action. Trisha, can’t tell whether she is the heroine or Mallika, sister of Vijay.

The director could have been better off (and we too), if he had opened the movie from the second half minus the songs!!!

Dear vasanth sorry for the mix up in text first line . due to copu-fatigue i believe.asfor "Thiruppachi' a film, the meaning is our popular "ARIVAL".Interstingly,10 iles from Trichy on Salem Rd is a place"THIRUPPACHILA- -thurai.Here they make varieties of "ARIVALS" including material from car springs and if U give the spring they charge only the labour.Long, short, cocoanut, garland, hook etc etc. all the best.P.K

Wow..what a coincidence! Happened to watch the same movie at Mayajal multiplex on Saturday ;)

There was enough and more of straight forward, really enjoyable comedy in the first half of the movie….but I cannot vouch for the presence of any sentimental panorama, because every prospective one made me giggle big time! (Sorry Mr.Director...just couldn’t help!)

I took a nap whenever a song popped out of nowhere (as u've mentioned) with Trisha and Vijay running around the trees. One of the songs was good to listen to(It made me open my eyes once or twice)..there was a bit of rap.

In essence…

Sentiments- -73% (this 73% is added to humour)

Humour- 163% (90%+73%)

Songs and Romantic Masala- can't be rated 'cos I'm talking about Thiruppachi and these did'nt look like a part of Thiruppachi at all lol!

Fights- Pretty good- excepting for glass panes hanging from mid air waiting to be kicked by Vijay- 70%

On the whole I enjoyed the movie immensely…..after all anything becomes special if are with your special someone ;)

hey Layman...I've more or less written a review of my own..don't mind!
